With a career spanning over 50 years, John Cale (born 1942 in Gernant, Wales) has spent half a century weaving his creative output between the worlds of avant-garde and pop music. From his time as a key member in LaMonte Young’s Theatre of Eternal Music, to his work as a founding member of The Velvet Underground, as well as a prolific career as a boundary pushing solo artist and producer with over fifty albums to his name, Cale has produced and collaborated with some of the most important figures in contemporary music from Patti Smith and Brian Eno, to Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Modern Lovers, Nick Drake and The Happy Mondays.
In this Artifacts bonus film Warhol assistant and collaborator Gerard Malanga and actress Mary Woronov recount their edgy performances with the Velvet Underground. Fashion designer Betsey Johnson, shares her story of falling in love and marrying John Cale at NYC City Hall. Columbia Records Executive Norman Dolph delineates the nuts-and-bolts of recording the Velvet’s ground-breaking first album.
